What is a root canal?
Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or diseased. Dental pulp is the soft tissue at the center of a tooth where the blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue are located. If not treated, infected pulp can result in pain and swelling, and tooth extraction may be necessary. To prevent these consequences, Dr. Sean Kennelly may recommend a root canal in Centennial, Colorado.
Infected dental pulp may be caused by:
- A deep cavity
- Multiple dental treatments
- A cracked or broken tooth
- Injury to a tooth
When performing a root canal, our dentist will make a small access hole in the tooth through which the diseased pulp will be removed. After the tooth is cleaned and sanitized, it will be filled and sealed. A filling will close the access hole, and in many cases, a dental crown is needed as well to protect and support the tooth. This treatment usually requires only one or two visits to our practice. Our team will make certain that your treatment is as comfortable and pain free as possible.
