It is bonded over the top of the tooth and looks just like natural tooth enamel due to its appearance. When might I need a dental crown?
Different situations may arise in which patients might need to have a dental crown placed on their teeth. Dr. Ava Khodakhast may suggest a dental crown when a tooth has:
- An extremely large cavity that was filled, but the structure of the tooth has been significantly affected
- Recently had root canal treatment, or endodontic therapy, that requires a crown to protect the weakened structure
- Been lost and then replaced with a dental implant, which needs a crown to restore function and appearance
- Been chipped or cracked due to trauma to the tooth, eliminating the need to extract the tooth and replace it
What can I expect from my dental crown placement?
Patients needing a dental crown will start the process with a consultation visit. Dr. Ava Khodakhast and her team will evaluate the smile and decide if a tooth can benefit from the placement of a natural-looking dental crown. If so, the process starts with preparations. The dentist files down the tooth structure to make the remaining tooth smaller to accommodate the crown. Impressions are taken, which are molds that show the contours of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. These impressions are sent to our quality dental laboratory, where a ceramist creates the final restoration, ensuring it matches the patient’s smile so the dental crown is not noticeable. In the meantime, our team places a temporary crown over the top that protects the remaining tooth structure and avoids damage until the new restoration is complete and returned to the dental office for placement.
